One of the most common questions about divorce is, how long does it take?
This is understandable, because divorce is a life changing process. You learn quickly that people are capable of handling the most difficult of situations, if they know what to expect. It is the not knowing that can cause stress.
The problem with divorce is, like a clock, it has a lot of working parts.
Be it ex-spouses that don’t return documents, courts that have back logs, or negotiations over the wedding china. It can become complicated.
Divorce How Long does it take?
You may as well be asking “how long is a piece of string?”
Because without being able to see into the future, any answer will be an educated guess.
The good news is that it doesn’t have to be complex, and you can take steps to reduce how long it takes.

Divorce how long does it take? The “Average” Case:
The average divorce takes between 4-6 months all going well.
But what about the companies that promise a ‘quickie divorce’?
The truth is they are making promises that they have no way of keeping.
Two factors influence how long is takes for a divorce to be granted:
– The co-operation of the parties or lack of co-operation
– The court/Divorce Centres schedule
What can I do to speed things up?
The most influential aspect is the conduct of the parties.
So agree as much as you can in advance. This will save you both time and money in the long run.
If you have an ex-spouse who is uncooperative get organised. Know what has to be done and when. Make sure you have up to date contact details for your ex-spouse if possible.
If they fail to respond to your application/petition, don’t just wait and hope that they will get round to it, you can continue with the divorce (you can’t just ignore a divorce petition you have to provide documentation to the court called ‘an answer’). Alternatively you can pay for documents to be served by a process server.
